Did you think I’d forget?

Rachel Carbo
Phoebe Hoffman

Phoebe is a Maryland-based artist and digital illustrator currently pursuing a BFA in Painting. Their multidisciplinary practice spans digital illustration, watercolor, animation, and comics, unified by a strong focus on narrative structure and character-driven imagery. They began creating stories visually at a young age—developing comics with their older brother—which laid the foundation for their ongoing interest in visual storytelling across media.

Phoebe has pursued advanced study through online courses with Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where they deepened their approach to experimentation, visual communication, and technical versatility. Their evolving body of work demonstrates a continual commitment to exploring new methods of expression and refining their craft. Through each project, Phoebe seeks to connect with audiences on both emotional and imaginative levels, offering imagery that resonates across personal and cultural boundaries.

Artist Statement

As a digital illustrator, I approach difficult subject matter through a distinctly cute, narrative-driven lens. I’m fascinated by the interplay between the grotesque and the charmingly feminine, using this contrast to highlight emotional and psychological complexities that often go unspoken. While my work isn’t always created with a fixed message in mind, I believe it succeeds when viewers discover their own meanings—whether they align with or extend beyond my own perspective.

My practice serves as a reflection of myself, offering a space to examine my experiences, beliefs, and inner thought processes. I’m drawn to how beauty and discomfort can coexist, and I aim to create images that invite both tenderness and unease. My March GSU exhibition focuses on themes of obsession, anger’s breaking point, detachment, and other delicate psychological states. Even when my imagery becomes violent or unsettling, I hope that viewers can find a sense of comfort within it.
