Financial Aid & Student Refund Scams
Cybercriminals are increasingly focusing on college and university students by posing as financial aid offices or refund services. These fraudulent messages commonly use email subject lines related to financial aid payments or refunds. The goal of these scams is to trick students into sharing sensitive information, including account credentials, phone numbers, student identification numbers, and other personal details.
What the Cybercriminals Do
These messages often contain attachments that appear to be legitimate documents. Within the attachments are links to fake forms created to gather personal information. Once the information is submitted, attackers may contact victims by phone or text while posing as bank representatives or school officials to request multifactor authentication (MFA) codes. You may also receive unsolicited MFA push notifications—do not approve them unless you are personally attempting to sign in. MFA codes should never be shared with anyone.
